Forex trading basics

Master the fundamentals before you follow a single signal. Free, plain-English guides to the concepts every trader needs.

What is forex trading?

Forex trading means buying one currency while selling another, always in pairs such as EUR/USD or GBP/JPY. Prices move as supply and demand shift with interest rates, economic data, and global events. Traders aim to profit from these movements. Because the market is so liquid, you can enter and exit positions almost instantly — but leverage means both gains and losses are amplified.

Trading strategies

Common approaches include scalping (many tiny trades held seconds to minutes), day trading (positions closed the same day), and swing trading (holding for days to catch larger moves). Most strategies blend technical analysis — support and resistance, moving averages, price patterns — with fundamentals like interest-rate decisions and news. The best strategy is one you can follow consistently and back-test honestly.

Choosing a broker

Prioritise brokers regulated by a reputable authority (such as the FCA, ASIC, or CySEC), transparent about spreads and commissions, and known for fast withdrawals. Test them with a demo account first. Be wary of promises of guaranteed profits or pressure to deposit quickly — hallmarks of unregulated operators.

Risk management

Never risk more than a small percentage of your account on a single trade — many professionals cap it at 1–2%. Always use a stop-loss, size your positions to that risk, and think in terms of reward-to-risk ratios. Managing risk means you can survive a losing streak, which every trader has, and stay in the game long enough for your edge to play out.

Trading psychology

Emotional decisions — revenge trading after a loss, moving a stop out of hope, over-leveraging on a hot streak — destroy accounts. Successful traders follow a written plan, journal their trades, and accept that losses are a cost of doing business. Patience and consistency beat adrenaline every time.
